What causes marital stress?

Posted on January 12, 2022 in Divorce

A lot of divorce cases start after a period of prolonged marital stress. This may mean that there isn’t a single event that instantly causes the couple to split up, but there is a long string of events that puts so much stress on the relationship that they eventually have to end it.

So what types of marital stress should you watch out for? If you see these different types in your marriage, does it mean it’s time to start thinking about a divorce? Knowing what to look for in advance can only help you, so here are a few examples.

You don’t know how to communicate

Communication problems often lead to stress because people just cannot talk about what is bothering them. They may feel like they are walking on eggshells and they’re nervous about upsetting the other person, but they don’t know how to say what they’re feeling. This is eventually going to come to a head and cause a bigger problem than if you would have just communicated well along the way.

You’re experiencing financial trouble

One of the biggest reasons for marital stress is simply financial stress. When money is tight, couples are constantly stressed about even daily costs and standard bills. They may also be stressed about trying to find a job, working long hours and things of this nature. Financial stress can take a toll, especially when it feels like there is no end in sight.

Your marriage is full of disagreements and arguing

It is not necessarily bad to argue with your spouse, and there are those who say that couples need to know how to disagree and work through it. However, there is a level of arguing and constant disagreement that can really cause a lot of stress in the marriage. If you feel like everything you say just causes a fight or like you can’t speak your mind without the other person getting angry, you’re probably only going to be able to live like that for so long. High-conflict marriages can also have a big impact on the children.

What should you do?

If you are experiencing high levels of stress and you believe it’s going to lead to a divorce, then it is time to start looking into all of your legal options in advance.
